Another sad story comes out of Jackson, Mississippi, as an 18-year-old lesbian student's senior prom was canceled instead of letting her wear a tuxedo and take her girlfriend.
This completely baffles me. The year is 2010, and our society should be way beyond this. It shouldn't even be an issue, but once again, a conservative area takes it into their own hands, makes an against the constitution discriminatory decision, and ruins a fun night for the entire school.
The female, Constance McMillen, didn't want to go back to the Itawamba County Agricultural High School , but was persuaded by her father, and she states from an Assoicated Press telephone interview, "My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am. The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on."
She's a very strong person for standing up for herself and what she believes in, and she is right, her hardship today, will help others in the future. It's just sad that it has to happen to her.
The district announced yesterday that it wouldn't host the April 2nd prom, and that decision came after the American Civil Liberties Union told school officials that a policy banning same-sex prom dates violated students rights, and the decision not to let McMillen wear a tux would violate her right to free expression. This came after a February 5th school memo to students saying that prom dates had to be of the opposite sex.
This story, I'm sure, is just in its beginning stages, and I hope there is outrage toward the school district and some kind of punishment. Every child should have every right and privilege as the next, and everyone, no matter the sexual orientation, should be able to enjoy their senior prom.
